The addition of searchable content in the background of digital photography files is
one of the best kept secrets of my profession. This capability has evolved directly
from the newspaper and wire service conventions and tools we used in the film era. In
the old days you would submit a ten inch B+W print with a typed caption attached to the
back in publicity campaigns. Images submitted to the AP (Associated Press) where
scanned and transmitted with the caption for distribution to local newspapers.
The inclusion of a caption that is well written and relevant (see the AP style book) is
only one of the items we use include in image files to make them search friendly.
Specific formatting, naming protocols and keywords add to the browser friendly data
that I use to optimize my photographs for search.
My goal is to create valuable business communication tools for my corporate photography
clients. Good photography is important but as we move from traditional Public Relations
methodology to a Social Media Public Relations model optimization is critical. Original
